Florida No Car Insurance

To get your license reinstated when you don’t own a vehicle, you’ll have to buy Florida no car insurance. Otherwise known as non-owner insurance, this type of policy can have an SR22 endorsement, or it can stand on its own. If the state requires you to have SR22 insurance, your insurance provider files the certificate with Florida HSMV. The SR22 filing allows you to reinstate your license and continue to drive, as long as you keep the SR22 policy current.

Florida no car insurance is for people who don’t own a vehicle and have to file an SR22 financial responsibility form for license reinstatement. UltraCar Insurance provides competitive Florida non-owner SR22 quotes and quick filing of your non-owner SR22 certificate.

How Florida no car insurance works

Florida non-owner insurance must have minimum liability coverage of:

  • $10,000 bodily injury per person
  • $20,000 bodily injury per accident
  • $10,000 property damage

In most cases, people have to maintain non-owner SR22 insurance for three years. Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) will suspend your driving privileges if you fail to keep the SR22 policy in force for a specific time.

Florida no car insurance serves as a guarantee of insurance coverage. When you have an SR22 filing, the insurance underwriter monitors the non-owner insurance policy. If you let it lapse, they will notify FLHSMV, and the state suspends your license again. To reinstate your driving privileges, you’ll have to pay a reinstatement fee that ranges from $150 to $500 for repeat offenders.

What’s the difference between non-owner and owner insurance?

Personal Injury Protection (PIP), also called No-Fault Insurance, insures a policyholder up to the limits of the policy. PIP does not consider whether you caused an accident or not. If people in the vehicle you were driving are injured, they will receive PIP coverage from their insurance company. Florida no car insurance DOES NOT CONTAIN PIP, which is why non-owner SR22 premiums are much lower than owner policies, which insure a vehicle.

What if I buy a vehicle later on?

If you currently have Florida non-owner SR22 insurance and buy a vehicle, you’ll need to convert to an SR22 owner-operator policy. Your premium will significantly increase when you insure a car. One of the reasons for this increase is PIP coverage. When you add an owned vehicle to an SR22 policy, it must contain PIP.

It’s a good idea to get an auto insurance quote before purchasing a vehicle, to make sure you can afford the payments. Contact your insurance agent and provide the vehicle information. Your agent can give you a quote with the vehicle so that you can make an informed decision.

Moving to another state when you have Florida no car insurance

Even if you permanently move to another state, you have to continue maintaining your SR22 policy for the required time. Your insurance provider will re-write the policy when it renews. You’ll have to find an insurance provider licensed in Florida and your new state so you can complete your Florida SR22 requirement.
