Indiana SR22 Insurance

Indiana drivers with a suspended license must file an Indiana SR22 insurance certificate for license reinstatement. SR22 guarantees the state that you are properly insured during time your license is suspended, so you can continue to drive. Another document, Indiana SR50, verifies that a driver is presently covered by the minimum liability insurance required by the state. Both documents are filed together with the Indiana BMV.

It can be difficult to shop for SR22 insurance, so let UltraCar Insurance do the shopping for you. Finding the best rates for Indiana SR22 insurance is crucial, as it is more costly than standard auto insurance. Our agents will find the best rate for you from among top rated insurance companies. We’ll file your Indiana SR22 insurance certificate quickly and accurately, in as little as twenty minutes from start to finish. UltraCar Insurance will save you frustration, time and money and help you get back on the road.

The state of Indiana requires anyone who has had their license suspended to carry Indiana SR22 insurance to reinstate driving privileges. The SR22 certificate is filed with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), and is usually required to be kept without lapse for 3 years. SR22 is a guarantee to the state that the driver remains covered by the required liability insurance during their suspension period. The most common reason for driver’s license suspension or revocation is being caught driving without the proper amount of insurance coverage. Other reasons for suspension of driving privileges can include DUI or DWI convictions, accumulating too many traffic tickets or points, multiple at-fault accidents, legal judgments, child support or neglect cases and other driving offenses.

What is Indiana SR22 Insurance?

Indiana SR22 insurance is a certificate of financial responsibility that is attached to a driver’s primary auto insurance policy. It can be written with comprehensive and/or collision coverage if desired. Indiana SR22 insurance is required by the state as a condition for driver’s license reinstatement, and the policy must be carried for a period of at least 3 years, and in some cases up to 5 years. The driver’s insurance provider files the SR22 certificate electronically with Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, and then monitors the policy throughout the required time period to assure that it remains in effect. If an Indiana SR22 insurance policy becomes void at any time, the insurance provider submits an SR26 filing to the Indiana BMV notifying them that the driver is no longer insured. This results in the driver’s license being suspended again.

Indiana also uses a document called Indiana SR50 as a means of verifying that a driver is properly insured prior to license reinstatement. Indiana SR50 is an affidavit or certificate that verifies present insurance (the driver is currently carrying the minimum insurance coverage required by the state), while Indiana SR22 is a certificate that verifies future insurance (a guarantee to the state that the driver will carry the minimum required insurance coverage for an assigned period of time). UltraCar Insurance files both the Indiana SR22 and Indiana SR50 certificates together for our clients. For more information, see our page titled Indiana SR50 Insurance, which describes in more detail the similarities and differences between Indiana SR22 and Indiana SR50 certificates.

Individuals who do not own a vehicle will purchase non owner Indiana SR22 insurance.  It covers the policyholder only, and serves as secondary insurance on vehicles that he or she may borrow to drive on an occasional basis. If the policyholder is at fault in an accident, his or her non owner SR22 policy will cover any claims remaining after the vehicle owner’s primary insurance limits have been reached. Non owner Indiana SR22 insurance is not valid for household vehicles. See our Non Owner Car Insurance Indiana page for additional information.

The state of Indiana requires all drivers to carry the following minimum liability insurance coverage:

  • $25,000 bodily injury per accident
  • $50,000 bodily injury liability for all injuries in an accident
  • $10,000 in property damage in one accident
