Indiana SR50 Insurance

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles usually requires both an Indiana SR22 and Indiana SR50 insurance certificate to be filed in order for a driver to reinstate their license. Experience matters – that’s why UltraCar Insurance always files both an Indiana SR50 insurance certificate along with an Indiana SR22 insurance certificate at no additional cost, regardless of the circumstances, to ensure that your license is reinstated without delay or hassle.

Indiana SR22 and Indiana SR50 insurance certificates are used for driver’s license reinstatement. They are added as a rider to an auto insurance policy. The Indiana SR50 is an affidavit of current insurance that verifies the driver currently carries the minimum required liability insurance. The Indiana SR22 certificate is a guarantee to the Indiana BMV that in the future, for a specified period of time – usually 3 years – the driver will maintain the minimum required liability insurance. Obtaining one or both of these certificates is a final condition for Indiana license reinstatement, after all other requirements have been met.

The status of a an Indiana SR22/Indiana SR50 insurance certificate is monitored closely by the insurance provider who filed it. If the policy lapses, expires or is canceled, the driver’s insurance provider immediately notifies the Indiana BMV by submitting an SR26 filing. This will result in their license being suspended or revoked again, with additional fines, fees or other penalties assigned in order to reinstate their license.

Offenses that can require a driver to carry Indiana SR50 insurance include:

  • Refusal to take a breath or blood test
  • DUI or DWI offense
  • Child support or neglect cases
  • Legal judgments
  • Operating an uninsured vehicle / uninsured accidents
  • Multiple driving offenses / excessive points on a driver’s record

An Indiana SR50 insurance certificate can be attached to a regular auto insurance policy if you own a vehicle, or it can be attached to a non owner auto policy if you do not own a vehicle. See our page titled Non Owner Car Insurance Indiana for more information about non owner Indiana SR50 and SR22 insurance.
