Nebraska drivers are required to purchase Nebraska SR22 insurance to have their driver’s license reinstated, whether it was suspended or revoked as a result of a DUI or DWI conviction, driving without the required minimum amount of liability insurance or another driving offense or situation. Nebraska drivers are required to carry a minimum amount of liability insurance:
- $25,000 bodily injury per accident
- $50,000 bodily injury liability for all injuries in an accident
- $25,000 in property damage per accident
What is Nebraska SR22 Insurance?
Nebraska SR22 insurance is not a standalone policy; it is a certificate of financial responsibility attached as a rider to a driver’s auto insurance policy. The SR22 certificate is filed with the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles to reinstate the driver’s license. Then it is monitored by the insurance provider who filed it to ensure that the driver remains properly insured during the probationary period set by the state. Nebraska SR22 insurance coverage is typically required for up to five years, and the driver must keep their policy current at all times. If the SR22 policy lapses or is canceled, the insurance provider will file an SR26 form, and the DMV will suspend their driving privileges again.
Nebraska SR22 insurance can be written as an owner policy for drivers who have a vehicle registered in their name or as a non owner policy for drivers who do not own a vehicle. For more information on non owners insurance, see our Non Owner SR22 Insurance Nebraska page.
Broad Form Insurance Nebraska
If you’re looking for the lowest Nebraska auto insurance rate possible, there is another type of policy called broad form insurance. The trade-off for such low rates is that it provides very minimal liability coverage. Broad form vehicle insurance covers only you when driving your own vehicle(s), so it’s also referred to as “named operator coverage”. Because of the bare-bones coverage it provides, you should speak with one of our agents to discuss if this insurance is suitable for you. If you don’t own a vehicle, broad form insurance can be purchased as a non-owner policy. In addition, an SR22 certificate can be attached to the policy for license reinstatement (see What is Broad SR22 Insurance? for more information).
