What is South Carolina SR22 Insurance?

SR22 insurance South Carolina is a high risk insurance policy required by the state in order to reinstate a driver’s license. SR22 insurance is a certificate of financial responsibility that is attached to a driver’s insurance policy, and filed with the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. It serves as a guarantee that the policyholder will keep in effect the required amount of liability insurance (see paragraph below) for a specified time period. Typically, drivers who must carry high-risk insurance must do so for three years. If the driver fails to maintain their SR22 insurance during the assigned time period, the insurance provider contacts the DMV by filing an SR26 form. When the DMV receives this filing, it will immediately suspend the motorist’s driving privileges.

South Carolina Minimum Liability Insurance Coverage Requirements:

  • $25,000 bodily injury per accident
  • $50,000 bodily injury liability for all injuries in an accident
  • $25,000 in property damage per accident
