What is Louisiana SR22 Insurance?
Louisiana requires all drivers to carry a minimum amount of liability insurance:
- $15,000 bodily injury per accident
- $30,000 bodily injury liability for all injuries in an accident
- $25,000 in property damage in one accident
When you have a license suspension, the state requires you to carry SR22 insurance. Louisiana can suspend or revoke someone’s driving privileges for various reasons, such as driving without the minimum required liability insurance, a DUI or DWI conviction, or accumulating too many tickets. Whatever the reason for your license suspension, you will have to purchase Louisiana SR22 insurance to operate a vehicle legally.
High-risk policies usually contain liability-only coverage, but a policy can include additional comprehensive and collision coverage if desired.
What happens after I file my certificate?
After your insurance provider files the Louisiana SR22 certificate with the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles, the issuing company monitors it to ensure it remains in force for the required period. In most cases, this is 3 years. The SR22 filing guarantees the state that you will maintain the required liability insurance coverage during that time. If you allow your policy to lapse, the insurance company must notify the Louisiana OMV by completing an SR26 filing. A lapse in payment will result in the OMV suspending driving privileges again.
What if I don’t own a vehicle?
If you don’t own a vehicle registered in your name, you’ll buy a non-owner Louisiana SR22 insurance certificate. A non-owner policy is secondary liability coverage that protects the policyholder against claims for injuries or property damage they may cause while driving another person’s vehicle. The vehicle owner’s primary insurance pays claims up to its limits, and the non-owner SR22 policy pays any claims that exceed the primary insurance limits. Non-owner insurance only covers vehicles the policyholder borrows occasionally – not for vehicles someone else in their household owns.
