Ohio SR22 Insurance

If you’ve had multiple motor vehicle violations or at-fault accidents, you may be required to file an Ohio SR22 insurance certificate with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Purchasing Ohio SR22 insurance is a requirement for license reinstatement. An SR22 certificate can be attached to your auto insurance policy, or to a non-owner insurance policy if you don’t own a car. An SR22 form can also be tied to a broad form insurance policy in the state of Ohio.

Motor vehicle violations such as multiple or uninsured at-fault accidents may require you to carry Ohio SR22 insurance. SR22 insurance can be costly, but UltraCar Insurance can help keep your costs down by working with top rated companies that offer competitive SR22 insurance rates. Our agents can issue and file your SR22 certificate electronically the same day we receive your inquiry.

The state of Ohio requires motorists to carry the following minimum amount of liability insurance:

  • $25,500 bodily injury per accident
  • $50,000 bodily injury liability for all injuries in an accident
  • $25,000 in property damage per accident

What is Ohio SR22 Insurance?

Ohio SR22 insurance is liability insurance in the form of a certificate of financial responsibility that is filed with the Ohio Department of Motor Vehicles. When a driver purchases Ohio SR22 insurance, their insurance provider submits the SR22 filing to the Ohio BMV. The insurance provider then monitors the policy on an ongoing basis for the time period the driver must carry the policy. If for any reason during that time the policy lapses, expires or is canceled, the insurance provider will file an SR26 form with the BMV, which results in suspension of the individual’s driver’s license.

There are two types of Ohio SR22 insurance for license reinstatement: owner SR22 if you own a vehicle and non owner SR22 if you do not. For more information about non owner SR22 insurance, see our Non Owner SR22 Ohio and Ohio Non Owner SR22 pages.

Broad Form Insurance in Ohio

Another type of auto insurance is available to Ohio drivers called broad form insurance, or named driver insurance. It has the lowest auto insurance rate you can get, but has serious limitations and coverage exclusions (see Broad Form Vehicle Insurance for more details), and speak with one of our agents to determine if this type of policy is suitable for you. Broad form insurance can be purchased as an owner-operator policy, which covers only you when driving your vehicle(s), or as a non-owner liability insurance policy if you don’t own a car. If you need an SR22 filing for license reinstatement, the SR22 certificate can be attached to a broad form policy (see What is Broad Form SR22 Insurance?).
