What is SR22 Insurance?

SR22 insurance is high-risk insurance the state requires drivers to carry to reinstate their suspended license. SR22 is a certificate of financial responsibility. An insurance provider endorses the certificate to an auto or non-owner insurance policy and files it with the South Carolina DMV. It guarantees that the policyholder will maintain the required liability insurance (see paragraph below) for a specified time. Typically, drivers carrying high-risk insurance must do so for three years. If the driver fails to maintain their SR22 insurance during the assigned period, the insurance company contacts the DMV by filing an SR26 form. When the DMV receives this filing, it immediately suspends the motorist’s driving privileges.

South Carolina Minimum Auto Liability Insurance Requirements:

  • $25,000 bodily injury per accident
  • $50,000 bodily injury liability for all injuries in an accident
  • $25,000 in property damage per accident

There are two types of SR22 insurance policies: owner and non-owner. Non-owner insurance is for individuals who have a driver’s license but do not own a vehicle. For more information, see our South Carolina Non-Owners SR22 Insurance page.

Is your license suspension a result of a DUI conviction? You may need to install an ignition interlock device to reinstate your license. We partner with Intoxalock IID services to assist our customers with this requirement.
