Virginia has two types of high-risk insurance certificates: SR22 and FR44. If your license suspension is for a violation unrelated to alcohol or drugs, you’ll file a Virginia SR22 certificate for reinstatement.
If you intend to drive a vehicle after license suspension, you’ll need Virginia SR22 insurance. This filing guarantees you will maintain insurance coverage that complies with Virginia’s minimum liability coverage requirement. UltraCar Insurance will file the Virginia SR22 insurance form for you.
Why do I need to file an SR22 form?
The Virginia SR22 insurance filing will help you continue driving after reckless driving, driving without insurance, or driving with a suspended license. You’ll need to maintain Virginia SR22 insurance status for three years, depending upon the severity of your conviction based on owner or non-owner status. The Virginia DMV notifies you when it suspends your license and lets you know how to get a Virginia SR22 filing. The most common reasons for driver’s license suspension include:
- Uninsured or under-insured driving
- Multiple motor vehicle violations
- DUI/DWI violations
- Court judgments
How do I get an SR22 certificate?
Contact your insurance provider if you already carry car, truck, or motorcycle insurance. In some cases, they may not be able or willing to file an SR22 on your behalf. In that case, you’ll have to find a company to issue an insurance policy with an SR22 attachment. UltraCar Insurance agents have years of experience providing high-risk insurance, and each has a license to sell insurance in Virginia.
How does Virginia SR22 insurance work?
Virginia SR22 insurance is a financial responsibility form that certifies you will carry mandated insurance during a specific time. When you have a suspended license, insurance companies consider you a high-risk driver. In addition, the state finds it essential for you to carry minimum liability insurance in exchange for reinstating your license.
The minimum liability coverage requirements for all drivers (including those who have SR22 insurance) are:
- $30,000 bodily injury or death per person
- $60,000 bodily injury or death per accident
- $20,000 property damage per accident
- $30,000 per person / $60,000 per accident for uninsured motorist bodily injury
- $20,000 for uninsured motorist property damage
You must file an SR22 with the Virginia DMV to reinstate your license. Usually, you’ll need to maintain Virginia SR22 insurance for three years. If the insurance policy tied to the SR22 lapses, the state will suspend your license again. You can then submit another SR22 filing, which involves additional reinstatement fees. The state may also extend your SR22 requirement at that time. It’s best to make your SR22 premium payments on time and renew your policy early.
Can I get an SR22 without a car?
There are two kinds of Virginia SR22 insurance certificates: owner and non-owner. If you own a vehicle, your insurance provider attaches the SR22 certificate to your auto insurance policy. If you don’t own a vehicle, you’ll buy a Virginia non-owners insurance policy with an SR22 endorsement. See Non Owner SR22 vs SR22 Insurance for more information about these two kinds of certificates.
There are some non-owner insurance coverage limitations that you should know, such as:
- If you have any teenage drivers in your household, you cannot use the Virginia SR22 policy as a cheaper insurance alternative for them.
- You cannot claim the towing charges in this policy
- The insurance does not cover commercial or rental vehicles, frequently borrowed vehicles, or any vehicles in your household.
- Employment-related vehicles are also not covered.
How much does Virginia SR22 insurance cost?
Before filing your SR22 Virginia certificate, the state will require you to pay a license reinstatement fee and other fines and fees. Some insurance providers charge a small fee for processing and filing your certificate (but UltraCar Insurance does not), and your insurance premiums may increase. Several factors affect how SR22 insurance costs are determined, including the circumstances that led to your SR22 requirement.
