Iowa SR22 Insurance

If you have a suspended driver’s license, you must file an Iowa SR22 insurance certificate with the DOT to regain driving privileges. You must also keep the SR22 insurance current during your suspension period—usually three years. SR22 insurance can also be filed in cases of child support or other legal judgments. You can tie the SR22 to your auto insurance policy or get a non-owner SR22 policy if you don’t own a vehicle.

What is Iowa SR22 Insurance?

The state requires high-risk drivers to carry SR22 insurance. High-risk drivers are those who have had license suspensions or revocations for driving without proper insurance, a DUI, too many traffic tickets, etc. Other situations can result in the suspension or revocation of a driver’s license, such as a child support case or legal judgment. Whatever the reason, the driver must purchase Iowa SR22 insurance to have their license reinstated.

How does it work?

SR22 is liability insurance in the form of a financial responsibility certificate. The insurance company submits the SR22 certificate on the driver’s behalf to the Iowa Department of Motor Vehicles. The certificate guarantees the state that the driver carries the required minimum liability insurance coverage for a specific time. Drivers carrying high-risk auto insurance must do so for three to five years. During this time, the insurance company monitors the policy closely. If it lapses, the insurance company submits an SR26 filing with the Iowa DOT, which results in another license suspension.

There are two types of SR22 insurance: Owner and Non-Owner. You must file a non-owner certificate when you don’t own a vehicle. Non-owner SR22 is secondary liability insurance covering vehicles you may occasionally drive but do not own. In the event of an accident in which you are at fault, the vehicle owner’s primary insurance pays accident claims up to its coverage limits, and the non-owner policy covers any additional claim amounts beyond that. See our Non Owner SR22 Insurance Iowa page for more information.
