Rhode Island SR22 Insurance

Are you a Rhode Island driver with an out-of-state license suspension?

Effective July 18, 2018, Rhode Island eliminated the SR22 insurance requirement and canceled all existing SR22 filings. However, what happens if you have an out-of-state license suspension due to an out-of-state traffic violation? In that case, you must file an SR22 certificate to prove compliance with that state’s SR22 requirement. Obtaining the out-of-state filing will prevent a Rhode Island driver’s license suspension.

Finding affordable SR22 insurance is not always easy. UltraCar Insurance is on your side when you have a Rhode Island SR22 insurance requirement due to an out-of-state license suspension. Our agents work to gather competitive insurance quotes from top-rated providers. In as little as 20 minutes, we can obtain and file your SR22 insurance certificate with the state that requires it. What is Rhode Island SR22 Insurance?

Although Rhode Island has eliminated its SR22 insurance requirement, drivers who must comply with an out-of-state SR22 requirement will lose their driving privileges in Rhode Island if they fail to file an SR22 certificate in the state that requires it. The Rhode Island Adjudication Office will notify you if another state requires you to file an SR22.

SR22 insurance is a financial responsibility form purchased through an insurance provider. The certificate is attached to your auto insurance policy (or a non-owner insurance policy if you don’t own a vehicle) and filed with that state’s Department of Motor Vehicles. It verifies that you carry minimum auto liability insurance for a specific time in the future.

Minimum auto liability insurance requirements in Rhode Island are:

  • $25,000 bodily injury per accident
  • $50,000 bodily injury liability for all injuries in an accident
  • $25,000 in property damage per accident

Typically, drivers must carry SR22 insurance for an out-of-state license suspension for 1-3 years. If your policy lapses or is canceled, your insurance provider must contact the other state’s DMV. Your insurance agent files an SR26 form, alerting the out-of-state DMV that you’re no longer insured. If this happens, the insurance company notifies the Rhode Island DMV of non-compliance, and the state will suspend your license.

There are two types of SR22 insurance for out-of-state license suspensions: owner SR22 insurance for individuals who own a vehicle and non-owner SR22 insurance for people who don’t.

Consult the Rhode Island DMV for more information about out-of-state license suspensions.
