What is Rhode Island SR22 Insurance?

Although the state of Rhode Island has eliminated the SR22 insurance requirement, drivers who must comply with an out-of-state SR22 requirement will lose their driving privileges in Rhode Island if they fail to file an SR22 certificate in state that requires it. The Rhode Island Adjudication Office will notify you if another state requires you to file an SR22.

SR22 insurance is a financial responsibility form that’s purchased through an insurance provider. The certificate is attached to your auto insurance policy (or to a non-owner insurance policy if you don’t own a vehicle), then filed with that state’s Department of Motor Vehicles. The SR22 certificate is proof that you are properly insured for a specific time in the future.

Minimum auto liability insurance requirements in Rhode Island are:

  • $25,000 bodily injury per accident
  • $50,000 bodily injury liability for all injuries in an accident
  • $25,000 in property damage per accident

Rhode Island SR22 insurance for an out-of-state license suspension must typically be carried for 1-3 years. Your insurance provider must contact the other state’s DMV if your policy lapses or is canceled. Your insurance agent files an SR26 form, which alerts the out-of-state DMV that you’re no longer properly insured. If this happens, the Rhode Island DMV is notified of non-compliance, and your license will be suspended.

There are two types of Rhode Island SR22 insurance for out-of-state license suspensions: SR22 owner insurance is for individuals who own a vehicle, and non owner SR22 insurance Rhode Island is for people who don’t own a vehicle.

Consult the Rhode Island DMV for more information about out-of-state license suspensions.
