Rhode Island no longer requires SR22 insurance for in-state license suspensions. However, if you have a Rhode Island SR22 insurance requirement due to a license suspension from another state, UltraCar Insurance can help. Finding affordable SR22 insurance isn’t always easy. Our agents work to gather competitive insurance quotes from top-rated providers. In as little as 20 minutes, we can obtain and file your SR22 insurance certificate with the state that requires it. We can help you get a low rate and file your certificate in the states where we offer SR22 insurance.
In addition to out-of-state SR22 filings, we provide standard auto and motorcycle insurance policies to Rhode Island drivers.
What is Rhode Island SR22 Insurance?
Although Rhode Island has eliminated its SR22 insurance requirement, drivers who must comply with an out-of-state SR22 requirement will lose their driving privileges if they fail to file an SR22 certificate in the state that requires it. The Rhode Island Adjudication Office will notify you if another state requires you to file an SR22.
SR22 insurance is a financial responsibility form purchased through an insurance provider. The certificate is attached to your auto insurance policy (or a non-owner insurance policy if you don’t own a vehicle) and filed with that state’s Department of Motor Vehicles. It verifies that you carry minimum auto liability insurance for a specific time in the future.
Minimum auto liability insurance requirements in Rhode Island are:
- $25,000 bodily injury per accident
- $50,000 bodily injury liability for all injuries in an accident
- $25,000 in property damage per accident
Typically, drivers must carry SR22 insurance for an out-of-state license suspension for 1-3 years. If your policy lapses or is canceled, your insurance provider must contact the other state’s DMV. Your insurance agent files an SR26 form, alerting the out-of-state DMV that you’re no longer insured. If this happens, the insurance company notifies the Rhode Island DMV of non-compliance, and the state will suspend your license.
Consult the Rhode Island DMV for more information about out-of-state license suspensions.
