Don't own a car, but need SR22 insurance?

Non owner SR22 insurance Michigan is a document filed for license reinstatement if you don’t own a vehicle. It guarantees the state that you will maintain minimum liability insurance coverage during your license suspension period. It insures you when they drive a borrowed vehicle on a limited basis.

As of February 2018, we do NOT offer non-owner SR22 in Michigan.

If you have a suspended license and don’t own a vehicle, non-owner SR22 insurance in Michigan allows you to reinstate it. Non-owner SR22 insurance is a certificate of financial responsibility filed with the Michigan DMV. It is high-risk auto insurance with liability-only coverage.

Reasons people require nonowner SR22 insurance:

  •     Uninsured accident
  •     Failure to submit to a breath or blood alcohol test
  •     DUI or DWI offenses
  •     Excessive points against a driver’s DMV record
  •     Child support order
  •     Legal judgment

How it works:

When you purchase non owner SR22 insurance Michigan, your insurance provider files the certificate with the Michigan Department of Motor Vehicles. This filing allows you to reinstate your license once you pay applicable fines or fees. The insurance company ensures you maintain the insurance policy while the state requires you to carry it. If you miss a payment or cancel your coverage during that time, the insurance company files an SR26 form to notify the DMV that you no longer have insurance. This results in license suspension.

Michigan usually requires high-risk auto insurance for three years. It’s a good idea to check with the DMV to confirm how long you must maintain your policy with the SR22 endorsement.

Non-owner insurance coverage protects you against liability when driving a non-owned vehicle occasionally. It is secondary insurance to a vehicle owner’s primary auto insurance. If you cause an accident, your policy pays claims if they exceed the vehicle owner’s insurance coverage.

Limitations of non owner insurance:

  • Covers only one person – you, the policyholder
  • Only for individuals who do not own a vehicle
  • Liability only coverage
  • Will not cover vehicles owned by others in your household or vehicles driven frequently
  • It does not cover rental, commercial, or employer-owned vehicles
  • The owner of any vehicle you drive must carry insurance on it

More information about Michigan driver’s license restoration is on the Michigan DMV website.

Effective February 2018, UltraCar Insurance does NOT offer Michigan SR22 insurance for non-owners. However, if you own a car, truck, or motorcycle, we provide owner/owner-operator SR22 insurance Michigan.
