There are two types of SR22 high-risk insurance: one for vehicle owners and another for non-owners. As the names imply, SR22 owner insurance is for registered vehicle owners, while non-owner insurance is for drivers who do not own a car.
What is Michigan SR22 insurance?
Drivers must buy Michigan SR22 insurance to reinstate a revoked license and keep coverage current for three years. A licensed high-risk insurance provider endorses the SR22 certificate to an auto or non-owner insurance policy and files that certificate with the SOS. The filing guarantees financial responsibility, indicating that you have coverage to pay for injury or property damage you may cause while operating a vehicle.
Insurance companies that write SR22 policies monitor them closely to ensure the policyholders don’t let them lapse while the state requires this coverage. The insurance company must immediately report an SR22 lapse to the Michigan SOS by filing an SR26 form, which results in license suspension.
Suspended vs. Revoked Licenses
Michigan distinguishes between suspended licenses and revoked licenses.
Suspended License (Definite or Indefinite)
Violations such as unpaid tickets, failure to appear in court, insurance lapses, or minor traffic infractions. The driver must pay a reinstatement fee of $125 (or $250 for particular drug charges and clear outstanding court warrants or fines.
Revoked License (Alcohol or Repeat Offenses)
License revocations resulting from multiple OWI/DUI convictions. License restoration is not automatic; the driver must request and be granted an administrative hearing.
Offenses Requiring a Hearing / No Hearing for License Reinstatement
What is Non-Owner SR22 Insurance?
EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY 2018: We do not offer non-owner SR22 in Michigan.
Non-owner Michigan SR22 insurance is for people who want to reinstate their license but don’t own a vehicle. Secondary insurance covers the policyholder when they drive a borrowed car insured by the owner. Non-owner insurance coverage does not include household vehicles, cars you frequently drive, rental vehicles, or commercial vehicles. If you’re at fault in an accident while driving a borrowed car, your non-owner insurance takes effect if the vehicle owner’s insurance reaches its limits.
