If you’ve had multiple motor vehicle violations or at-fault accidents, you may be required to file an Ohio SR22 insurance certificate with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Purchasing Ohio SR22 insurance is a requirement for license reinstatement. An SR22 certificate can be attached to your auto insurance policy, or to a non-owner insurance policy if you don’t own a car. An SR22 form can also be tied to a broad form insurance policy in the state of Ohio.

Motor vehicle violations such as multiple or uninsured at-fault accidents may require you to carry Ohio SR22 insurance. SR22 insurance can be costly. But UltraCar Insurance helps keep your costs down by working with top-rated companies with affordable SR22 insurance rates. Our agents can issue and file your SR22 certificate electronically the same day we receive your inquiry.

The state of Ohio requires motorists to carry the following minimum amount of liability insurance:

  • $25,500 bodily injury per accident
  • $50,000 bodily injury liability for all injuries in an accident
  • $25,000 in property damage per accident

What is Ohio SR22 Insurance?

Ohio SR22 insurance is high-risk liability insurance in the form of financial responsibility certificate. When you purchase an owner or non-owner SR22 policy, we attach the certificate and file it with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). The insurance company that issued your policy monitors it during the time you must carry the policy. If your policy lapses, even once, the issuing insurance company submits an SR26 form to the BMV. The SR26 cancels your SR22 filing, which results in another license suspension.

There are two types of Ohio SR22 insurance for license reinstatement: owner SR22 if you own a vehicle and non owner SR22 if you don’t. For more information about non owner SR22 insurance, see Ohio Non Owner SR22.

Broad Form Insurance in Ohio

Another type of auto insurance is available to Ohio drivers called broad form insurance, or named driver insurance. It has the lowest auto insurance rate you can get, but has serious limitations and coverage exclusions. (See Broad Form Vehicle Insurance for more details.) Because of the nature of this type of policy, we recommend speaking with one of our agents to determine if it’s suitable for you. You can purchase broad form insurance as an owner-operator policy, which covers only you when driving your vehicle(s), or as a non-owner policy if you don’t own a car. If you need an SR22 filing for license reinstatement, you’ll attach the SR22 certificate to the broad form policy (see What is Broad Form SR22 Insurance?).
