Louisiana SR22 Insurance

Whatever the reason for suspension of a driver’s license, a Louisiana SR22 insurance certificate will have to be filed with the state to regain driving privileges. Vehicle owners will file an SR22 owner certificate that’s attached to their auto insurance policy, and persons who don’t own a vehicle will have an SR22 certificate filed with a non-owner insurance policy. Drivers will usually be required to carry SR22 insurance for 3 years.

What is Louisiana SR22 Insurance?

Louisiana requires all drivers to carry a minimum amount of liability insurance:

  • $15,000 bodily injury per accident
  • $30,000 bodily injury liability for all injuries in an accident
  • $25,000 in property damage, in one accident

When your license has been suspended or revoked, the state requires you to carry SR22 insurance. Driving privileges can be suspended or revoked for various reasons, such as driving without the minimum required liability insurance, being cited for a DUI or DWI, or accumulating an excessive number of tickets. Whatever the reason for your license suspension, you will have to purchase Louisiana SR22 insurance to legally operate a vehicle.

Louisiana SR22 insurance is usually purchased with liability only coverage, but the policy can be written with additional comprehensive and collision coverage if desired.

What happens after my certificate is filed?

After your Louisiana SR22 insurance certificate is filed with the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles, your policy is monitored to make sure it remains in force for a specific period of time. In most cases this is 3 years. The SR22 filing guarantees the state that you will remain insured with the required liability insurance coverage during that time. If you allow your policy to lapse, the insurance provider is required to notify the Louisiana OMV by completing an SR26 filing. This will result in the OMV suspending driving privileges again.

What if I don’t own a vehicle?

If you don’t own a vehicle registered in your name, you’ll buy a non owner Louisiana SR22 insurance certificate. This is secondary liability coverage in the event that the policy holder is involved in an at-fault accident while driving another person’s vehicle. The vehicle owner’s primary insurance will pay claims up to the maximum limits, and any claims exceeding the primary insurance coverage will be paid by the non owner SR22 insurance. This coverage is only for vehicles that are borrowed on occasion – not for vehicles that are in the policy holder’s household.
